Josh Makower, M.D.

Senior Advisor

Josh Makower, M.D. is a Senior Advisor to Patient Square Capital. Dr. Makower is The Yock Family Professor of Medicine and Bioengineering at the Stanford University Schools of Medicine and Engineering and the Director of the Stanford Byers Center for Biodesign, a program he co-founded in 2000. Josh is also the Founder and Executive Chairman of ExploraMed, a medical device incubator that has created numerous successful companies. Notable transactions from the ExploraMed portfolio include Acclarent (acquired by J&J), EndoMatrix (acquired by C.R. Bard), TransVascular (acquired by Medtronic), Nuelle (acquired by AyTu Biosciences), and Neotract (acquired by Teleflex). Josh currently serves on the boards of Revelle Aesthetics, ExploraMed, Moximed, X9, Willow, and Coravin.

Josh holds over 300 patents and patent applications for various medical devices in the fields of cardiology, ENT, general surgery, drug delivery, obesity, orthopedics, women’s health, aesthetics, and urology. He received an MBA from Columbia University, an M.D. from the NYU School of Medicine, and a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from MIT. Additionally, Dr. Makower is a Member of the National Academy of Engineering, a Fellow of The National Academy of Inventors and The American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering, and was awarded the Coulter Award for Healthcare Innovation by the Biomedical Engineering Society in 2018.
